Americas Food Suply

Purdue is a major processing company in Salisbury, Maryland. This company takes about 6 million dollars worth of takes each year. Nicholas Kristof was the author of "Abusing Chickens We Eat" which was publicated in the New York Times. Kristof was arguing that animals, regardless if they're food or not, should not be treated cruely.

The evidence to support his argument was that the animals were being feed hormones when the CEO says that they're being raised humanily.

The farmers stood up against the CEO. The best quote from this article was "doing the right things is things like treating you chickens humanely," said by Jim Perdue. This is ironic because chickens by that company are not treated that way. It is wrong that chickens are treated cruelly, especially because we have laws that are against animal abuse.
The living conditions of 1906 were very terrible. The waste from toilets were thrown straight out of the window. Rats and flies were infested everywhere. None of the workers wore gloves when they were cutting meat. There was feces everywhere. The Meat Inspection Act helped Americans by preventing adulterer and misers dead meat. Meat had to be handled in sanitary environments. This also forced companies to be honest.

Public Education and Inequality

Horace Mann was one of the most influential
person to contribute to bringing education public. 

 The reason that public schools were created was the U.S. depends on science and technology, so it provided training for better jobs. It was key for a stable and prosperous democratic nation. Education provided financial security and social class. This also assimilated millions of immigrants. Some problems with this first public school was that it was only 4 months of school for 8-14 years olds only. The students were also miserable because they were mistreated by their teachers. 

Majority of the students were white. Whites were encouraged
To go to schools. 

Public schools provided child care for parents. It also took kids from working in the factories. Children needed to learn how to read, write, and understand math. 
These schools perpetuated inequality. White and blacks had very different opportunities. 62% of the children attending these schools were white and 34% were black. Europeans were encouraged to learn. These schools also replaced native languages with English.

Summary of Technology Readings

 In the article compiled by Danny Blas, technology changed how and where we lived because we were able to deal with crowdedness. We started to live in skyscrapers due to inventions such as the elevator and steel reinforced skeletons. Because of technology, we were able to fit more people into less space.
Technology also changed how people moved around. American cities began to electrify transportation with electric streetcars that were also called trolley cars. Subways and trains also contributed to population increase. Railroad networks and steel cable suspension connected the cities.
Technology changed the way people read and learned. This was caused by newspapers. The cost of newspaper priced was reduced due to a lot of purchases. Since newspapers were cheap, more people were able to learn.
In the article compiled by Danny Blas, a passive house is an environmental friendly house that doesn't use traditional heating and air conditioning systems. Passive houses are different from traditional houses because they only use a fraction of the amount of energy traditional houses use.
The Americans and the Germans have different believes on the passive houses. This is because the house in the different regions are different. I would settle these differences by making different restrictions in different regions.
Some people that reside in expensive neighborhoods would be against the new passive houses because they look different from traditional homes. They also believe that these homes are not unique and all look the same.

The Erie Canal was a man-made waterway. It helped transportation for products and people. This was significant because Americans could now use waterways instead of natural rivers.

entrepreneurs made a huge impact by increasing the growth of economy for our country. The free enterprise operated the profits with the government regulations. Entrepreneurs invested their money in gaining more profit in new industry machines. Free enterprise and entrepreneurs  both shaped the economy of the United States by providing jobs for people in need. 

The single-most important resource to the U.S was natural resources. It helped the U.S. become a world-wide industrial power. Some examples of natural resources that the U.S. had were cotton, rice, tabacco and fossil fuel.

Black gold was significant because the automobile became popular so the demand for oil increased. It allowed for better transportation for products and people. 

Steel was manufactured by removing carbon from the iron which produced a lighter and more flexible metal. They would do this by blasting air into the iron which removed the carbon. Steel helped the U.S. become an economic power because it was used in almost every structure in that era. Steel became 90% of the U.S.'s production. 

In 1871, 26,000 tons of steel was produced. In 1884,
there was 118,000 tons produced.

Buildings were changed and improved during the Industrial Revolution because people started to use steel frames in their buildings. People began to use different methods to manufacture steel. 

Levi Kinsel Essay

In my Honors U.S. History and Geography class, my teacher, Mr. Blas, purchased a treasure chest at an estate sale. Inside of the box were letters from Levi Kinsel, who was a U.S. sailor during the World War Two. While he was traveling, he regularly sent letters to his wife, Rose Kinsel, in San Diego. My peers and I transcribed the historical documents. We also input data such a word counts, important words and pictures of the letter along with it’s envelope into an online database. The letters were then put in chronological order. Based on the evidence from the letters, Levi Kinsel was a companion, dedicated and considerate of others.
According to dictionary.com, the definition of companion is “a person who is frequently in the company of, associates with, or accompanies another.” Throughout the letters, Levi showed that he is a companion by associating with his wife and others in his writing. Kinsel showed this personality trait on August 11, 1945 when he asked, “How are you and Sandy boy? I would sure like to be there.” In this letter, he showed that he was concerned with people in San Diego. He knew that he could not physically be with them so he associated with them by asking how they are in his letters. On August 28, 1945, Levi Kinsel said, “Well I have been busy but have written you letters you should have before now. I sent two packages a week ago sent them first class so you should have them by now.” Even though he claims to be a busy man, he still made time to accompany his wife. He showed that he is companionable by mailing her the fastest way possible.
According to google.com, the definition of dedicated is “the quality of being dedicated or committed to a task or purpose." Levi Kinsel showed that he was dedicated to speaking with his wife in each letter. When he did not have much to say, did not feel good or was simply tired, he still wrote to her. Levi Kinsel showed dedication on March 7th, 1939. He said, “I have a pretty sore on my finger on my right hand now I was sharpening the butcher knife and I cut it and it got infected I have been going to the sick bay everyday for a week and it does not seem to be getting better.” Although he was injured, he still made it a priority to write to Rose and mail off the letter. He also showed dedication on March 30th, 1939. He said, “I received your letter yesterday and that maybe I better answer it. I will send that stuff to you in a few days…” Levi responded to Rose’s letter one day after he received it although he had a very busy schedule with patrolling the base. On top of that, he sent her another package quickly.
According to google.com, the definition of considerate is “careful not to cause inconvenience or hurt to others.” Levi Kinsel showed that he is considerate by treating his wife with respect and asking how things were in San Diego. On April 25, 1939, he told his wife, “I hope you are feeling better.” Although we do not know what was wrong with her, this shows that he was considerate of her feelings and her well being. On January 29, 1941, he asked, “Is Sam doing okay?” This shows that he not only cared about himself or his wife, but the other people in San Diego as well. Although he talked about his life frequently, he often put people before himself which shows that he was very considerate of others.
There are many personality traits that are illustrated by the evidence in Levi Kinsel’s letters. Some of them are dedicated, companionably, and considerate. He showed that he was a caring person who was dedicated to speaking to his wife and associated himself with not only Rose, but the other people he left in San Diego.
